The benefits of pruning are endless. Here's a quick guide to pruning different plants.

Young Plants

  • Pruning young plants helps in productive growth and attractive form.

Fruit
  • Pruning fruit trees helps keep the tree in shape, and helps with the production of fruit.

Hedges
  • Pruning hedges helps for maintain their shape, is necessary for maintenance and ensures good healthy growth. Start when the plant is young for best results.

Shrubs
  • Pruning shrubs helps with growth, flowering and shape whilst also preventing the spread of infection.

Trees
  • Prune tress to let in more light and maintain the shape (topiary) of the tree.

Pruning Do’s & Don’ts
  • Do use the right tool : secateurs for smaller branches, loppers for thicker branches, a sharp pruning saw for anything larger.
  • Do cut out all dead, damaged or diseased wood, then prune the bush into shape.
  • Don’t prune to a bud if the plant has thin wiry stems.
  • Don’t prune if it isn’t needed or you are in doubt.
