Building your own swing set is a fun and rewarding project that can bring hours of enjoyment for the whole family.

Ricky & Hayden created a sturdy and stylish swing set using reclaimed timber and some basic tools.

Do It Yourself!

1. Measure and Plan the Area

Decide on the placement of your swing set. Make sure you have enough space around the structure for the swings to move safely.

2. Purchase The Timber

3. Prepare the Timber

Cut your reclaimed timber to the desired lengths for the vertical posts and the horizontal crossbeam. Make sure the cuts are clean and even.

3. Dig the Post Holes

Use an excavator or a manual post hole digger to dig two holes approximately 1 metre deep. This depth will provide structural stability for the swing set. Ensure the distance between the holes matches the length of your horizontal timber.

4. Set the Vertical Posts

Place the vertical posts into the holes and use a level to ensure they are standing perfectly upright. You might need a second person to help hold them steady.

5. Pour the Concrete

Mix your concrete according to the instructions and pour it into the holes, securing the vertical posts. Allow the concrete to set for 24-48 hours to ensure the posts are firmly in place.

6. Attach the Horizontal Beam

Once the concrete has set, use steel brackets and bolts to secure the horizontal crossbeam to the vertical posts. Pre-drill holes for the bolts to ensure accuracy and then use a wrench or socket set to tighten the bolts securely.

7. Install the Swings

Attach the swings to the horizontal beam. Ensure they are spaced evenly and at a safe height off the ground. Most swing kits will come with instructions for proper installation.

8. Final Check

Double-check all bolts and connections, making sure everything is secure and safe. Test the swing for stability before letting anyone use it.
