Refreshing old furniture with chalk paint

Time takes its toll on furniture. Sun, moisture and neglect can make old timber look worn and shabby – and not in a good way! But upcycling old pieces couldn’t be easier. Dulux Chalk Effect Paint is an ultra-matt chalk paint that can be sanded back to create a custom distressed look.

And it’s not all that hard when you get the right gear from your local Mighty Helpful Mitre 10.

Step 1: Prepare your timber

Before painting, you need to prepare your timber to ensure a smooth finish. Start by removing any old knobs and unwanted hardware, then sand your timber to remove any imperfections and flakes of old paint using your Rockwell 135W Detail Sander and Detail Sanding Sheets.

Step 2: Paint your furniture

To ensure your chosen colour of Dulux Chalk Effect Paint shows up to its best advantage, you may need to apply a primer before your top coats. Put down a drop sheet to protect the floor and mask off any areas you’d like to keep natural using painter’s tape. When you’re ready, paint your furniture with Dulux Chalk Effect Paint using a clean brush. Allow at least 2 hours between coats to give the paint enough time to dry.

Step 3: Protect your painted surfaces

When your paint is dry, protect the natural timber surface from water and stains by applying a layer of Organoil Wax & Polish. Use a clean, dry cloth to apply the wax, and only use a small amount at a time to ensure the wax spreads evenly.

Step 4: Attach your hardware

Once the wax is rubbed in, finish off your furniture by attaching the new knobs or handles. Depending on the depth of your drawers or doors, you may need to dock the bolt so it’s the right length using a pair of pliers.
