How to Rescreen Your Fly Screen Window

Is your fly screen window looking worse for wear? Don't worry, refreshing it is easier than you think. Over time, fly screens can become damaged or worn out. Instead of replacing the entire screen, which can be costly, learning how to rescreen it yourself can save you money and extend the lifespan of your window. Follow these steps to give your window a new lease on life:

DIY Project Steps

1. Remove Old Spline and Mesh

Carefully remove the old spline and mesh from the frame using a flat screwdriver or spline tool. Begin by catching one end of the spline and gently pulling it out, followed by removing the mesh. Dispose of the old materials responsibly.

2. Give the Frame a Quick Clean

Wipe down the frame with a damp cloth to remove any dirt, dust, or debris. This will ensure a clean surface for the new mesh.

3. Measure and Cut Your New Mesh

Lay out the new mesh over the frame and measure it to size, leaving a slight overlap on all sides. Use sharp scissors or a utility knife to cut the mesh to fit the frame.

4. Install the Spline to Keep It in Place

Starting at one corner, use a spline roller tool to press the new spline into the groove of the frame, securing the mesh in place. Work your way around the entire frame, making sure the mesh is taut and wrinkle-free.

5. Trim Excess Spline and Mesh

Once the spline is installed all the way around, trim off any excess spline and mesh using a sharp utility knife or scissors. Be careful not to cut into the frame or the mesh.

With these steps, you can easily rescreen your fly screen window and enjoy a fresh, clean look with improved insect protection—all while saving money in the process.
