Quaternary ammonium compound (quats): A family of cationic disinfectants. This means the quats chain carries a positive charge on one end of the molecule. They work by denaturing the proteins of the bacterial or fungal cell, affecting the metabolic reactions of the cell and causing vital substances to leak out of the cell.
Quaternary ammonium compounds generally take 3-10 minutes to disinfect and should be used with cleaning tools to suit.
