Our top biking destinations for your next getaway
This one goes out to the trail-blazing tradies out there – you know who you are.
While plenty of people are probably planning their family getaways for the summer break (check out our ‘Family-Friendly Holiday Ideas’ article, if so), some of you might be after something more… extreme.
Whether you’re a mountain biker or a dirt biker, Australia has some seriously amazing trails for you to explore on your own two wheels.
Take a look at our greatest hits, state by state – then, get out there
The Great Ocean Road, Victoria
Along this winding coastal route, you’ll roll past knock-your-breath-out scenery punctuated by pubs, cafes and eateries in some seriously picturesque towns.
Looking to get off-road? There are plenty of opportunities to break away north for some great adventure rides, including through the stunning Otways.

New England, New South Wales
There’s a lot of history along New England’s sweeping roads, not to mention some really impressive views.
Classic towns like Glen Innes, Armidale and Inverell will give you plenty of reasons to take a break (read “enjoy some amazing food and drinks”). The long summer days always make for an unforgettable atmosphere.
The Flinders, South Australia
This ancient landscape calls out to the adventurous at heart and makes an explorer out of just about anyone.
Stunning spots like Wilpena Pound, Arkaroola and Rawnsley will give you plenty to discover – as long as you’re up for the challenge this rolling, rocky, beautiful landscape offers.

Cape York, Queensland
Something of an adventure-riding pilgrimage, getting to Cape York is only getting easier – but the deepwater crossings and resident salties mean it’s still one of the world’s greatest adventures.
While there’s plenty of 4x4 driving in the area too, bikers can test their mettle on the CREB Track, Cooktown or The Lion’s Den. Get on it!
Jacob’s Ladder, Tasmania
This steep and dramatic road to Ben Lomond Plateau zig-zags its way up a sheer slope, with each turn making the stunning view – one of the best in the hemisphere, in our opinion – that much better.
The hairpin turns make the ride a challenge, but take it slow and the climb will be one of the most memorable rides of your life.
Finke, Northern Territory
Mainly known for the race, the Finke River ride from Alice Springs is an amazing one at any time of year.
Another one that’s probably not to be taken on unless you’ve got some experience under your belt, the challenge is well worth it for the views down Finke Gorge, or across to the Finke RIver. A truly iconic ride.
West Moto Park, Western Australia
There’s something for everyone at West Moto Park. Just starting out? There’s a track for that. More experienced and chasing a challenge? There’s a track for that too.
With dynamic courses plus space to stay, you’ll absolutely find the track for the level of adrenaline you’re chasing over a few relaxing, thrilling days. River, remove capital I in river
