Get out of town over the break with these top camping spots
Keeping a young family entertained over the holidays is often easier said than done. Way, way easier.
But hey, why can’t planning a getaway be a memorable and fun experience for everyone?
We’ve already covered some adventurous biking destinations in our ‘Get the Bike Out for Summer’ article this month. Now, let’s look at some amazing destinations that the whole family can enjoy.
Think camping, surfing, fishing; everything great about an Aussie summer, basically.
The Whitsundays, Queensland
Explore the Great Barrier Reef from an island paradise right at its heart. The Whitsunday Islands are a classic family destination for a reason: soft, bright sands, stunning weather (mostly) and plenty of water activities.
With a range of resorts, campsites and other places to set up, the kids will love taking a cruise around the islands, jumping in a glass-bottom boat or kayak, or scuba diving over the world-famous reef.

Kakadu, Northern Territory
The World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park boast sunny skies, endless natural beauty and a rich indigenous history etched into the landscape itself.
Just 90 minutes out of Darwin and 20,000km2 (nearly half the size of Switzerland), the Park offers kids a limitless space to explore, go on a croc-spotting cruise, swim in Gunlom Falls and see Australian nature as it’s been for thousands of years.

Golden Beach, Victoria
This is bush camping at its best. Get the family set up just metres from the sand and crashing waves along the seemingly endless stretches of Ninety Mile Beach, then start exploring.
Whether you’re up for enjoying the brilliant surf, a round of golf (dodging kangaroos), wandering a truly special landscape of wildflowers and animals or visiting the 143-year-old beached wreck of the Trinculo, Golden Beach has it all.

Broome & The Kimberley, Western Australia
Located way up in Australia’s north-west, Broome is packed with things to see and do. The city is also the doorway to a world-class wilderness: the Kimberley.
Visitors can swim in rivers and gorges, hike or horse-ride through stunning landscapes, and learn about local Indigenous cultures. If you’re after some beach time, head to the shore for fishing, or let the kids walk in the preserved footprints of dinosaurs from over 130 million years ago.

Cradle Mountain, Tasmania
Famous for its incredible scenery spread across kilometres of sweeping peaks, clear blue lakes and lush, misty mountains, Cradle Mountain is quintessential Tasmania.
A bit cooler than other destinations, you’ll still find plenty of places to set up and relax, with communal kitchens, laundries, BBQs and other facilities ready to go. This rugged landscape never fails to amaze, and will make a life-long memory for any adventurous kids out there.

Legendary Pacific Coast, New South Wales
This epic touring route will take your family through 48 national parks, 12 state forests, vibrant tourism towns and villages – and a whole lot of sun, sand and ocean.
From spotting dolphins and whales, to snorkelling with turtles, to making the pilgrimage to the most revered of Australian icons - The Big Banana – the Legendary Pacific Coast offers something for everyone.
Little Dip Conservation Park, South Australia
Just outside Robe, you’ll be sure to find a prime bush camping spot along this amazing 12 kilometres of sandy coastline or near its many beautiful lakes.
With every body of water offering a hugely different environment to explore, there’s opportunities for quiet reflection, surf fishing, beachcombing, horseriding or even 4-wheel driving. It’s hard not to feel connected with nature after a few days here.
