DIY Project Steps

1. Prepare your timber

When working with timber, preparation is key! Getting your surface ready is vital as it gives you a smooth, even finish to work with, allowing the coating to glide on more effectively. The condition of the timber you’ll be coating will determine how you prepare. Is your timber:

-New bare timber
-Weathered and grey timber

New Bare Timber: Scrub damp timber with Cabot’s New Timber Prep to draw out tannins and oils from the surface. After this is done, use Cabot’s Deck Clean according to the label’s instructions. Allow your timber time to dry, and you’re ready for coating.

Weathered and Grey Timber: Sand any old timber back to bare, then fill cracks or holes with a suitable filler. Make sure you sand all surfaces flat before dusting and cleaning with Cabot’s Deck Clean.

2. Application

It’s important to make sure the weather is right before you embark on this next step – ensure the temperature is above 10°C during application and drying time, and do not apply if rain is expected during the drying period.

Good to go? Stir Cabot's Garden Furniture Oil thoroughly with a broad flat paddle before and during use. Using a brush, roller or spray gun, apply a generous coat along the timber, making sure you seal the end grains. If you’re using a spray gun, always back brush immediately to ensure an even finish.

3. Allow to dry

Once the first coat has been applied, allow it to dry for two hours. Once this has happened, apply a second coat using the same method. Note that previously uncoated timber may need three coats.

4. Admire your handiwork

And just like that – you’re done! Your timber furniture is ready to enjoy out in the sun. Now add a cushion, put your feet up, and relax.
