How To Style Your Laundry for Under $500

Does your laundry need a little TLC? With some creative shelving, a lick of paint and some clever storage it can look like new and a place in the home worth spending more time. And all for under $500. Here’s how.

DIY Project Steps

1. Planning a new look

First up, a laundry makeover starts with assessing the space. Work out what needs to stay and what should go.  As a rule, laundries lack space so some D.I.Y. shelving, cabinets and clever storage solutions and wall mounted hooks are great space savers.

One of the best reasons to renovate a laundry room is to ensure the room is functional. When planning, think about ease of use, ergonomics and don’t shirk on the storage.

2. Cleaning up and what you'll need

First up you’ll need to clear out the laundry. Remove everything.  Then clean up. Wash the floor and walls and grab all the tools you will need, to get the job done.

3. Prepping the wall

Before applying paint, remember to tape up around tiles, skirting boards, anywhere you don’t want the paint. This might take some time, but it’s an important step.

Fill and sand any holes for a smooth finish. Once you’ve applied the paint, leave to dry overnight. Depending on the paint, you might need to apply more than one coat. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.

4. Splash of paint

A lick of paint can really help spruce up a room. Choose a colour that suits the space. As a general rule a light, natural tone works well in smaller rooms. While for larger spaces use darker shades.

5. Creative storage

You can never have too much storage, especially in the laundry. Be creative with your storage solutions. For larger spaces consider cupboards and cabinets and for smaller spaces ready to assemble shelving units are ideal. Shelving is also a great way to display bathroom linen and allows easy access.

Ready to assemble storage units come with manufacturer instructions to make the job easy.

6. Install shelves

As well as floor storage, think shelving on the wall. These are out of the way and is a super way to hold laundry cleaning items, linen and other decorative pieces. Wall shelves add extra style and warmth to your new laundry look.

To install the shelving, start by finding the wall studs to provide the right support. Use a stud finder for this job. Then measure and mark the spot for the shelves. Ensure the bracket is level and secure. Insert the shelf and secure with screws provided.

A Stylish Result

And there you have it. A new-look laundry that adds value, oozes style, with the added bonus of much needed storage. Simple and practical is always key in work areas of the home. For a half a days’ work and $500 you can create something wonderful in the Laundry.
