Wood pallets have become a firm favourite material for the budget-savvy DIY enthusiast. Often found for free, this raw material provides an interesting and on-trend look for whatever you are creating. Transforming a pallet into a vertical herb bed is a creative and space-saving way to grow your favourite herbs. Follow these simple steps to turn a basic pallet into a stylish and functional addition to your garden.
DIY Project Steps
1. Grab Your Pallet
Find yourself a pallet—many stores will give these away for free, so don’t be afraid to ask. Once you have it, plan the layout of your herb bed. Decide where each herb will go, which slats you'll need to remove, and how many beds you want to create.
2. Remove Unneeded Slats
Safely remove any slats that are not needed for your design. Use a crowbar or hammer to carefully pry them off. Be cautious to avoid damaging the pallet and always follow safety measures.
4. Screw into Place
Attach the cut slats or timber to the pallet, creating the base and sides for the herb bed. Use screws to secure them tightly, ensuring the structure is sturdy.
5. Line with Geo-Fabric
Apply your choice of finish, we’ve gone with a walnut interior stain. Make sure to apply the stain evenly, working with the grain of the wood. Let the stain dry completely. We used one coat for ours and left it to dry outside for an hour.
Tip: If you want a deeper colour, you can apply a second coat of stain after the first coat has dried
6. Fill with Soil and Plant Your Herbs
Fill the compartments with good-quality soil. Plant your herbs in the soil, making sure they have enough space to grow. By following these steps, you'll have a functional and attractive vertical herb bed, perfect for growing fresh herbs in a compact space. Enjoy your new garden addition!
