Waterproof Your Bathroom With Wedi

Planning to renovate your bathroom? Then the Wedi System is the perfect choice for professional tradespeople and DIY. Wedi is 100% waterproof, lightweight, and easy to cut and install. It’s the quickest, easiest and best substrate behind your tiles or stone in your next bathroom renovation.

DIY Project Steps

1. Check the plumbing

There’s a range of Wedi products suited to all kinds of jobs so make sure you have the right materials for the job at hand. First up, check plumbing for the water drainage outlet. Then trim the drainage pipe if needed. Before starting on the job, be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions and follow these with care.

2. Prepare the subfloor and wall

Check and prepare the subfloor and walls in the bathroom area. The subfloor must be clean, even, sufficiently loadbearing and fully cured.  Wedi building panels are a minimum of 10mm thick and can be installed directly onto framing with studs placed maximum 450mm apart.

3. Measure, cut and dry-fit the Wedi shower base

Measure and cut the Wedi shower base. When cutting the shower base, wear the appropriate PPE. Make sure you dry-fit the shower base to provide a tight fit into your shower recess.

4. Click and seal the drain

Install the Wedi click and seal drain to the back of the shower base. To ensure the right seal, check that the single marks on the top are aligned centre between the double hash marks indicated on the fitting.

5. Apply the adhesive

Clean the area and wipe away any dust and debris before mixing up adhesive. Apply the right adhesive to your substrate using a 10x10mm notch trowel. Additionally, apply the adhesive onto the back of the shower base before adhering it to the floor.

6. Install the wall panels

Cut wall panels to size and adhere with Wedi 610 sealant. Sealant must be used to fill the entire z-notch channel between the shower base and wall sheet to create a waterproof seal.

7. Fasten in place and seal

Wedi wall panels can be attached to the framing using Wedi screws and washers. Always apply a continuous beat of Wedi 610 sealant between wall sheet joins to ensure a watertight seal. It’s important to apply a second beat bead of Wedi 610 sealant to all joints. Smooth out the sealant with a putty knife and ensure coverage is a minimum of 20mm across both seams. Applying and smoothing a small amount of sealant around wall fasteners ensures they are sealed.

8. Install a recessed niche and seal plumbing fixtures

A recessed niche with shelves can be used to store personal hygiene products such as shampoo and body wash. Measure and mark the dimensions of the shelf unit and then cut out the area with a utility knife and install the recessed niche. Use a circular blade drill or utility knife to cut out holes for tap outlets and apply sealant around tap areas to apply Wedi sealing gaiters to waterproof the plumbing fixtures.

9. Waterproof your bathroom floor

Install a Wedi 6mm board on the bathroom floor. Apply the adhesive to the substrate as well as apply 610 Sealant for every joint as well as screw holes to waterproof the entire area.

10. Let the tiling fun begin

The Wedi waterproofing is done, now you’re ready to start tiling.

NOTE: Waterproofing with Wedi offers great results. To ensure success always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consult a builder for professional advice if required.
