Merbau is a popular hardwood and has a high degree of natural durability. It is known to be one of the most durable surface-checking hardwoods and an excellent choice for decks built closer to the ground. Merbau is a popular decking choice due to its ability to stand up to the times with its natural features even in the harshest environments, including bushfire resistance, weather and termites. Merbau is also commonly used for screening and fencing applications.
Merbau decking is reeded on one side and smooth on the other to protect it against moisture, in turn providing longevity to the lifespan of the product. Ensure new Merbau has been exposed to all weather conditions to assist with removing tannins and oils from the surface. If not properly weathered, tannins will cause the timber to seem uneven and discoloured once stained. Once weathered, ensure Merbau timber is washed and then evenly coated with oil to bring back the deck's natural beauty and warmth.
