FAQs
Can I install LYSAGHT® steel fencing myself?
Yes. Installing a steel fence is within the capabilities of most competent DIY’er’s. A detailed installation guide is available here: LYSAGHT Fencing Installation Guide
What components do I need to make up one LYSAGHT® fence panel?
You will need 2 fence posts, 2 universal rails (a top and bottom rail), 3 fencing infill sheets, 14 self-drilling screws and your choice of post caps.
What are the standard heights for LYSAGHT® fencing?
The standard heights are 1200mm, 1500mm, 1800mm and 2100mm.
I've heard that COLORBOND® steel should not be immersed in concrete. How will this affect my LYSAGHT® fence posts?
LYSAGHT® fences feature prepainted galvanised steel posts and COLORBOND® steel infill sheets. Immersing the galvanised steel posts in concrete does not cause any corrosion problems but you should not allow the concrete to contact the rails or infill sheets of the fence.
Can I use LYSAGHT® steel fencing around my pool?
You should check with your local council for regulations on fences around pool areas. Particular care needs to be taken if LYSAGHT® steel fencing is to be installed within the 'splash zone'. Both salt and chlorine may have a corrosive effect on the COLORBOND® steel finish and as such, may impact the life of your fence and negate a warranty claim.
Can LYSAGHT® fencing be used as a retaining wall?
No. LYSAGHT® fencing has not been designed or tested for use in this application. It is highly likely the soil will cause corrosion of the COLORBOND® steel from which the fence is manufactured.
Can I use LYSAGHT® fencing in a saltwater environment near the ocean?
COLORBOND® steel fences should not be installed within 1 kilometre of marine, severe industrial or other corrosive environments.
Can I install a steel roof myself?
In some states of Australia, steel roofing falls under the category of plumbing, which can only be performed by a licensed contractor. Please refer to your local authority for advice relevant to your state.
Can I install LYSAGHT® guttering myself?
In some states of Australia, installation of guttering falls under the category of plumbing, which can only be performed by a licensed contractor. Please refer to your local authority for advice relevant to your state.
How do I maximise the life of LYSAGHT® steel products?
Factors that most affect the long life of a roof (or wall, gutter, fence) are original design, the environment of the installation, and the maintenance of the installation. Maintenance is probably the biggest factor.
Maintenance includes:
- Regular inspection for problems before they become major corrosion sites;
- Regular washing down, especially near coastal or industrial influences;
- Removal of leaves and other debris from gutters, downpipes, leaf-guards, slots, holes and other overflow devices;
- Keep walls free of soil, concrete and debris near the ground;
- Don’t overspray pesticide
What do I do if my LYSAGHT® product gets scratched? Will scratches lead to corrosion?
It is best not to touch up minor damage, such as scratches, with paint. Minor scratches will not affect the performance of your LYSAGHT® product because the metal alloy coatings on the steel effectively protect any cut edges or scratches from corrosion.
Do I need to clean LYSAGHT® steel products?
The paint system on LYSAGHT® steel products is very durable. Where the paint finish is naturally washed by rainwater (roofs, for example) there is usually no additional maintenance needed. For other areas such as walls and fences a simple wash down with water every six months is all that is generally required.
Where regular maintenance doesn’t remove all the dirt, wash the surface with a mild solution of pure soap or non-abrasive non-ionic kitchen detergent in warm water. Use a sponge, soft cloth or soft bristle nylon brush; be gentle to prevent shiny spots. Thoroughly rinse off the detergent with clean water. Never use abrasive or solvent cleaners (like turps, petrol, kerosene and paint thinners) on COLORBOND® steel surfaces.
Can I use touch up paint on my LYSAGHT® steel products?
Lysaght does not recommend the use of touch-up paint to repair damage or scratches to the painted surface of its product. These air drying paints have different weathering characteristics to COLORBOND® steel, leading to variations in appearance over time where touch-up paint has been used.
Minor scratches (< 2mm in width and unnoticeable from ground level) should be left alone as the available metallic coating will protect against corrosion. If scratches are more noticeable on new material, LYSAGHT® recommend replacement of the affected product.
