As part of the Mitre 10 DIY Contestant Challenge, Courtney and Grant undertook the construction of two arbors for their front Master Bedroom outdoor entertaining area
Building your own Garden Arbor is ideal support for climbing plants and adds an element of style and sophistication to any space.
Planning:
- They selected 115mm x 115mm Cypress Pine posts from Mitre 10, opting for 6m lengths to provide adequate overhang between the two vertical uprights
- The posts were positioned 3.5m apart
- Footings were excavated to a depth of 1m and 450mm in width to ensure a solid foundation
- Before installation, the sections of the posts that would be below ground level were coated with tar paint for added protection and left to dry
Building the Arbors:
- They began by pouring 100mm of concrete mix into each footing hole, positioning the posts, and securing them in a level and straight alignment with temporary support braces
- The remaining concrete mix was then poured, and the posts were left to cure for 24 hours before the supports were removed
- Once cured, the posts were trimmed to a height of 2.8m above ground level
- The Arbors were installed using 2 x 200mm bugle screws per post, with pre-drilled holes to prevent splitting
- To complete the project, all timber was painted with an outdoor black finish to match the existing exterior trims of the house
