How To Paint A Birdbox With Accent®

Is there anything more delightful than waking up to the sounds of birds chirping away in your garden? Birdboxes help to provide a safe shelter for birds to build nests. They offer protection against the elements and predators. So if you’re keen to attract birds to your backyard, a birdhouse can make an excellent addition to your outdoor space while helping you do good for the environment. Why not build one or buy an unfinished box that you can decorate yourself? It makes a great weekend project and is family-friendly – the kids will love it! Create a stylish two-tone design with our easy-to-follow guide below. And whether you like dreamy pastel tones or vibrant bright colours, the Accent Small Project range has something for everyone. This is one fun project sure to liven up your backyard.

DIY Project Steps

1. Sand

Start by sanding your birdbox. We recommend 180 grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. Sand all surfaces including under the eaves, the perch and the base.

2. Prep

Wipe down your birdbox with a tack cloth to get rid of any dust from sanding and apply one coat of Accent Multi Prep Water Based. This will aid paint adhesion and ensure a durable result.

3. Paint first colour

Now it’s time to paint. Paint half the birdbox, including under the eaves and the perch, with your first Accent Small Projects colour. Allow a minimum of two hours to dry, then gently sand the surface and apply a second coat.

4. Mask & paint second colour

Allow the first colour to completely cure for 48 hours before creating a graphic shape using masking tape. Here we have used the half/half effect which is super easy and effective, just mask around the middle of your birdbox and under the eaves. Then paint the roof and bottom half of the birdbox with your second Accent Small Projects colour. Lightly sand when dry and repeat with a second coat. While the paint is still wet, remove the tape. Start at one end and pull the tape back on itself in a steady, slow motion at a 45º angle, to reveal a crisp edge where the two colours meet.

Creating the perfect birdbox to complement your backyard and outdoor décor is simple, and you’ll be reaping the benefits of your effort for years to come with plenty of visits from your feathered friends! Birdhouses can bring joy and happiness and are a lovely way to connect with nature while enhancing your backyard. You can make an impression by improving your home with Accent.
