How to refresh your front door

Transforming your entrance can have a huge impact on how you feel when you step inside your home. If your current doorway needs reviving a little elbow grease and a few plants will go a long way.

And it’s not all that hard when you get the right gear from your local Mighty Helpful Mitre 10.

Step 1: Remove your door

Take your door off its hinges using your drill or screwdriver and set it on two sawhorses. Remove any hardware so you don’t get any paint on them, remembering to conserve the screws for any hardware you’d like to reattach.

Step 2: Prepare and paint the surface

Sand your front door to remove any imperfections and traces of old paint. When you’re happy with the finish, paint the surface with 2–3 coats of Wattyl Solagard, leaving two hours between coats so the paint dries properly.

Step 3: Re-attach the hardware

Once the paint is dry, reattach any old hardware you’re keeping using your drill and the conserved screws. Replace the handle with your new Buyright Lane Entrance Lever Set, according to package instructions, ensuring you line up the new handle with the existing lock mechanism.

Step 4: Re-hang your door

Rehang your door using a drill or screwdriver. You’ll need two people for this part – one person to hold the door in place while the other person screws in the hinges. Style your front entrance by adding pot plants and a doormat – we love the look of clean magnolias in dark pots.
