A home’s front door can communicate a great deal about one's style, taste and personality. From classic, clean whites to subtle, soothing pastels or brilliant statement brights, there are colour options available to suit all preferences. Updating a home’s front door is a simple, economical and effective way to inject new life into any exterior. Our step by step guide below will help you from start to finish and don’t forget to take a look at our shopping list, so you have all the tools and materials on hand for a professional-looking result.
Ensure you have the correct equipment
Having the right tools on hand makes any painting job easier.
Buy tools as and when you need them and build up your kit gradually.
You will need:

1. Sand
Get started by laying down your drop sheet. Remove the door from its hinges and place it on a sawhorse or similar to keep it up off the ground. Carefully fill any holes or cracks with a suitable filler and allow to dry. Next, sand to a smooth surface using medium grit sandpaper. Sand mouldings and grooves with a sanding block or a piece of folded sandpaper.

2. Mask
After the sanding is complete, remove all sanding residue with a brush to get rid of dust. Before you move on to priming, it’s important to mask off any windows, locks, hinges, and door handles that can’t be removed.

4. Topcoat
Once the preparation has been completed, you are ready to paint. Start by painting the mouldings first and then move on to the flat panel sections. Work in small sections, away from the corners to avoid paint build up. Lay-off each section with a brush. If using a roller, do not lay-off with a brush. Leave the door to dry for at least 2 hours before applying a second coat. Lightly sand between coats with a 240g or 320g sandpaper for a smooth finish.
You can take any front door from boring to brilliant with these four easy steps. Best of all, with lots of great colours on offer you can be sure to find something that you’ll love for years to come. So, why not roll up your sleeves, pop open a fresh tin of paint and get started on this great DIY project this weekend? You can help your home to stand out and make an impression with Accent.
