How To Stop Cockatoos From Opening Your Bin

Are cockatoos a frequent nuisance, rummaging through your trash and creating a mess? Common hacks to fix this problem include rocks, bricks, shoes or even bottles filled with water but sadly these are far from perfect, and experts even claim that cockatoos are so smart they know how to work around these tricks.

Here is a quick and easy hack to permanently stop those Cockatoos from opening your bin!

DIY Project Steps

1. Mark Tee Hinge

Grab your tee hinge and place it right in the middle of the front section of your bin lid. Use a texter to mark where the hinge should go. Putting dots where the screws go will help you with the placement and mark the top position of the bin's front edge.

Note: We used a 150mm tee hinge

2. Bend Tee Hinge

Using a couple of shifters give the hinge a gentle bend, aiming for about a 15-degree angle where you made the mark.

After you've done that, just pop the hinge back onto the bin to see if it's bent at the right angle. If it's not quite there yet, don't stress—just give it a little adjustment until it sits just right.

3. Mark Tee Hinge again

Now, take that bent hinge and put it back where it should be. Then, use your texter to mark where the bottom of the bin's front edge hits.

4. Bend to a L shape

Grab those shifters once more and give the other end of the hinge a gentle bend at the spot you marked. This will create a neat L shape that acts as a catch under the edge of the bin. After that, put the hinge back where it belongs. Take one of the handles of the lid and give it a little lift to see if it catches properly.

5. Fix to the lid

It's time to attach the hinge to the lid. You've got a few options here: screws, pop rivets, glue or adhesive. We're going the friendly route here, so Soudal Fixall it is! It's strong, quick, and won't leave a permanent mark on the council property.

Once it is fixed in place, leave it for 24 hours to dry.
